Bereavement Support Group FAQ
Peer Support Groups at Balanced Wheel are open to anyone who has experienced a bereavement, regardless of when or how the event occurred.
There is no timeline for grief. The impact of bereavement continues for many years and some people may only be able to talk about it after many years.
You’re welcome to join this bereavement peer support group regardless of how short or long your bereavement has been.
The simple answer is no. Think of this support group as a confidential and non-judgemental space where you are connecting with people with similar experiences with the same goal to support and share.
The support group isn’t a replacement for counselling or therapy if you need one.
Attending support groups isn’t right for everyone because we are all different and may not be ready to explore this option.
Losing a loved one can make you feel lonely and isolated. Our own experiences in bereavement have provided us with an understanding of what it feels like to be surrounded by friends and family members but need someone to turn to.
This support group may not be for everyone. Instead, it is for those who are looking for friendship, sharing coping strategies, and mutual support in an environment where they can relate to each other.
Each session is different. The conversations will majorly be about sharing your story and experiences, how you’re feeling, and how we are learning to cope with grief.
The end goal of the support group is that you will be able to build your own grief coping toolkit, feel heard, feel empowered, and have a sense of belonging when you leave.
If you don’t find the group helpful, you don’t have to stay or return. However, you may find it helpful later on in your bereavement journey.
The support group is free to attend.
